PRESS RELEASE: KUSA KUSA ENDS, UKHOZI FM LAUNCHES RADIONOVELA
After much deliberation, Ukhozi FM has reached a decision to conclude the storyline of its long-running soapie Kusa Kusa. Following a consistent decline in the story’s listenership in the past few fiscals, the department undertook to refresh the prime-time slot’s offering.
The scheduling of this production at 3pm requires that it be more dynamic and agile in satisfying the needs of the drama listener while fulfilling the SABC mandate and realizing return on investment. Research of worldwide PBS content trends shows that audiences are more responsive to shorter, high-drama commissions of one or two clearly defined outcomes, instead of longer productions with many story threads trying to address a wide variety of issues.
The drama department wishes to refute an article published on page 3 of Isolezwe on Sunday the 26th of February 2017, in which they claim that the production environment is unmanageable, as untrue. They claim to have an ‘inside source’ who created fictitious events, and we believe the publication did not employ reasonable effort in obtaining right of response from the drama department.
Kusa Kusa was launched to a receptive market and delivered highly relevant content for its times; we conclude production confident that it achieved its set objectives and has been successful as a partnership between Ukhozi, its cast and crew, and our faithful listeners.
Future of the Slot
Ukhozi FM is excited to introduce a new drama format, the Radionovela. The radionovela is distinct in that it’s longer than the short story, but shorter than the soapie. There are other key distinctions that we’ll only reveal at the launch of the production on Monday the 1st of May 2017.
These are exciting times in which we’d like to refresh the isiZulu drama profile with all our valued stakeholders, the most important being our listeners.
