More about Ngizwe Mchunu

Ngizwenkosi Brian Mchunu hails from the lush, rural area of Inkandla, a few kilometers from the legendary Isandlwana Mountain where the mighty Zulu army defeated the British Imperialist army in 1879.

Ngizwe is a self-starter, whose love for radio developed at a very early age. Ukhozi FM’s “Vuka Ukhanye Africa Show” which was driven by Welcome Bhodloza Nzimande ranks among Ngizwe’s favourite shows. Mandla Malakoana and later, Linda Sibiya, also instilled the love for radio in Ngizwe.

His path to Ukhozi FM was not a straight one. In his late teens, he joined the Mkabayi kaJama stage play. The highlight of the play was performing at His Majesty’s Enyokeni Royal palace. Thereafter, Ngizwe joined yet another play called “Shaka Zulu”. It was this play that enabled him to tour countries like Belgium, France, Switzerland, British Islands and the Czech Republic.

In order to sharpen his oratory and performing skills, Ngizwe then joined the University of KwaZulu-Natal for a six-month course on Communication with emphasis on Speech and Drama and Computer Literacy.

In 2002, he joined the Lifeline NGO where he was trained as a counselor and a caregiver. His enthusiasm and natural flair for dealing with people saw him quickly climb the ranks and become a facilitator. It was through his innovation that he started a programme to deal with child trafficking. Because of his efforts in this regard, in 2006 he was invited to a Youth Ending Commercial Children Exploitation and Child Sex Tourism Conference which was held in Tanzania under the auspices of the United Nations.

Since joining Ukhozi FM he has transformed the 02:00 to 04:00 show into one that is vibrant, interactive and exciting. The “Isigqi Sezwe” show attracts listeners from all walks of life and different age groups. However, the major draw card is the use of the IsiZulu language and putting the African way of life in the epicenter of public discourse. He has carved a niche listenership dealing with nation-building topics while appealing to all the listeners of Ukhozi. Macingwane, as his fans call him, is definitely one of the rising stars of Ukhozi FM.
